How cashback at the register actually works — and what stores earn
Cashback at checkout is not a new concept. Grocery chains like Kroger and Woolworths have offered it for decades — your card processor already supports it. What Cashtic adds is discoverability: when a local needs cash, they open the app and see your store on the map instead of walking to an ATM.
The transaction is simple. A customer comes in, buys something, and asks for cashback at the register. You run the card transaction for the purchase amount plus the cashback amount. The cashback comes from your till — you're not out of pocket, because the same amount came in via the card payment. You keep a commission on the cashback amount, set entirely by you.
What does a store actually earn?
Commission rates on Cashtic typically range from 1% to 5%. At 2% on a $100 cashback transaction, you earn $2. That sounds small — until you look at volume:
| Daily transactions | Avg cashback | Commission | Monthly earnings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 customers/day | $60 | 2% | ~$108/month |
| 5 customers/day | $80 | 3% | ~$360/month |
| 10 customers/day | $100 | 3% | ~$900/month |
Beyond the commission, each cashback customer makes a purchase to qualify — typically $5–$20. That's incremental register revenue that wouldn't have happened if they'd gone straight to an ATM.
Does offering cashback affect my cash float?
Marginally, yes — the same way any card transaction does. When a customer pays by card and takes $60 cashback, $60 leaves your drawer. But the card transaction settles to your bank account, typically next business day. If your store already handles card payments (which adds cash to your bank, not your till), this is the same process in reverse. Most stores manage this easily by setting a sensible daily cashback limit — $200–$500 is typical for a convenience store.
Which store types see the most cashback customers?
Convenience stores and gas stations see the highest volume — they're high-traffic, already cash-friendly, and customers don't need a reason to visit beyond filling up or buying a coffee. Pharmacies and grocery stores perform well because customers already have a purchase in mind. The lowest-friction setup is a store where the cashback customer would have come in anyway — they just need a reason to pick your store over the competitor next door. Being on Cashtic's map gives them that reason.
